Streszczenie
The objective of the study was to determine regression equations for age at death prediction on the basis of features of from the cortical bone of the ribs in the Polish population. Rib fragments were taken at autopsy from 39 male and 35 female cadavers. The age range for the male samples was 18–88 years with a the mean age and standard deviation of 49.23 ± 21.47, and for the female samples, the corresponding value was 50.43 ± 19.21. Soft tissues were removed by boiling and subsequently the specimens were degreased using acetone. Two cross sections about 5 mm thick were cut from every rib by a sabre saw. The specimens were ground to a final thickness of approximately 100 m. The sections were polished and then cleaned by soaking in acetone and alcohol for 24 hours. Microscopic analysis was performed to determine the mean osteon population density. Regression equations for predicting age were generated using osteon density as the independent variable and age as the dependent variable.
