PROFESSOR ADAM SZYMUSIK (1931–2000) – THE CREATOR OF MODERN FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY IN POLAND

Professor Adam Szymusik was one of the most outstanding psychiatrists of the post-war generation and the longest-serving director of the Clinic and Faculty of Psychiatry at the Jagiellonian University School of Medicine. He was permanently affiliated with the Institute of Forensic Research in Kraków for several years. He published more than two-hundred scientific papers. The two dominant strands in his research were forensic psychiatry and the pathology of concentration camps. He took part in the Auschwitz programme under the direction of Antoni Kępiński. His doctoral thesis was a clinical description of KZ Syndrom (concentraion camp syndrome). In forensic psychiatry, he was the pre-eminent specialist of his generation. He was the founder of modern forensic psychiatry in Poland and established it as a separate forensic science. He recognised the need for comprehensive and multi-track diagnosis and therapy – especially in the interplay of law, psychiatry and psychology.
