Streszczenie
Cases of acute volatile organic compounds poisonings happen relatively rarely and mostly concern teenagers who become intoxicated by inhalation of organic compounds and glues. A rarer cause is accidental oral intake or inhalation, and (mainly oral) intake for suicidal purposes. In order to correctly interpret results of toxicological analysis carried out with the aim of determining volatile analytes in biological material – a detailed history of the patient and knowledge about accident circumstances, results of post-mortem examination and histopathological analysis are needed. The authors present fatal cases which occurred from 2001 to 2006, which were analysed at the Department of Forensic Medicine and cases of hospitalised persons at the Department of Internal Disease, Geriatrics and Clinical Toxicology of the Medical University of Gdańsk, in whose bodies volatile organic compounds were detected. Moreover, two cases of acute poisonings by "Nitro" diluter are analysed in detail.
