EFFECT OF ABS AND CBS ON MOTORCYCLE BRAKING DECELERATION ON A WET ROAD SURFACE

Streszczenie
The aim of the article is to present the results of investigations into motorcycle braking deceleration on a wet road surface and to draw attention to the differences that may occur between the deceleration reached by motorcycles equipped with conventional and advanced braking systems. Another aspect worth focusing on is the influence of motorcycle riders’ skill on braking deceleration. Motorcycles equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) ensure greater safety and enable greater braking deceleration to be reached than motorcycles without such a system. In turn, motorcycles equipped with a combined braking system (CBS) reach a much greater braking deceleration under a system whereby a brake lever basically activates the rear brake, but also the front brake linked with it. Braking a motorcycle equipped with such a coupled braking system activated by a brake lever may result in braking deceleration that is 50 to 100% greater than when braking a motorcycle without such a system – using a lever that activates (just) the rear wheel brake. However, no braking system, no matter how advanced, will ensure the maximum deceleration achievable in given conditions unless the rider has knowledge and experience in motorcycle extreme braking.
