Streszczenie
This article, which explores the relationship between temperament and insomnia with respect to prisoners’ mood and feelings of stress, reports a study of 185 male and female Polish prisoners that is composed of a set of demographic questions and four questionnaires: TEMPS-A (Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa and San Diego Auto-questionnaire), AIS (Athens Insomnia Scale), UMACL (UWIST Mood Adjective Checklist) and KPS (Feeling of Stress Questionnaire). Statistical analysis showed that depressive, cyclothymic, irritable and anxious temperaments correlate positively with insomnia symptoms, while hyperthymic temperament correlates negatively with them. The results also demonstrated that mood and the level of stress can be considered as mediators between symptoms of temperament and insomnia – especially in the case of anxious temperament. The study finds that it is valid to diagnose temperament, insomnia, mood and feelings of stress among prisoners to provide them with the highest possible quality of life in prison.
