Technological advances have made the documents easy to modify for malicious purposes. Modern reproduction devices using inkjet and toner technology have revolutionised the reproduction of documents with much improved quality. Easy availability of gadgets such as computer, scanner, digital camera, printers, photocopiers and multifunctional devices has exponentially increased the fraud and counterfeiting. There is no doubt that technology has made the examination of fraudulent documents much more complex, but by understanding the printing mechanism, the way modern digital output devices produce data on documents; and how these documents are forensically examined and what can be ascertained from their examination is discussed here in this paper.
