The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of alcohol and drugs of abuse on road traffic safety. The study was based on analysis of cases carried out at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. The paper presents a statistical analysis of cases in relation to the structure of observed incidents, particularly road accidents. The study encompassed 3705 cases analysed at the Department of Forensic Medicine in the years 2000–2004. Qualitative factors were considered: e.g. site of event, gender, mortality, cause of event with percentage participation of road accidents in all analysed cases and also quantitative variables. Statistical analysis of the obtained results was carried out with the use of descriptive statistical methods. To evaluate the correlation between the features, the Pearson χ2 test was used and the power of dependence defined by means of Cramer C and V contingence factors.
