RECOVERY OF BIOLOGICAL TRACES INTENDED FOR DNA ANALYSIS: THE ADVANTAGES OF USING A SIMPLE KIT

Ricky ANSELL
SKL, National Laboratory of Forensic Science, Linköping, Sweden

Streszczenie
Modern techniques allow DNA analysis of small biological samples, potentially resulting in very strong scientific evidence. The whole process of handling scientific evidence such as biological traces (blood, saliva, hair and semen), from sampling at the crime scene up to analysis at the forensic laboratory, requires high standards of quality and reliability. However, accreditation of forensic laboratories – to maintain and support high quality standards – does not usually encompass crime scene sampling and the handling of material before it reaches the laboratory. By using standardised and approved materials and containers for crime scene sampling a high level of quality can be maintained – “ready-to-use kits”, which also contain relevant guidelines, facilitate accomplishment of this task.
